Meet Outstanding Master’s In Petroleum Engineering Graduate Peng Zhang

Peng ZhangPeng Zhang has been selected as one of the five finalists for the Fall 2021 Alumni Association Outstanding Master’s Graduate Award. He was nominated for the award by the Department of Petroleum Engineering in the College of Engineering.

Zhang will be recognized during the Graduate School Commencement ceremony on Friday, where he will receive a master of science in engineering degree in petroleum engineering.

Dr. Boyun Guo, an endowed professor in the department of petroleum engineering, director of the , and graduate coordinator offered Zhang’s nomination.

During his time in the master’s in engineering program, Zhang contributed to Guo’s research into oil and gas wells and developed several research papers.

His article, “Numerical Simulation of CO2 Migration into Cement Sheath of Oil/Gas Wells” was published in the Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering (JNGSE) — “the best journal in oil and natural gas engineering research,” Guo notes.

Zhang also has papers in review with the Journal of Electrostatistics and SPE Production & Operations.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Northeast Electric Power University in China. He worked as a civil engineer at CHN Energy Ledong Power Generation Company for several years, then realized he wanted to deepen his knowledge through graduate studies. 

With his master’s degree in hand, Zhang will now continue to advance his studies in petroleum engineering at UL Lafayette through the doctoral program in systems engineering.

“Mr. Zhang is not only a hard-working student, but also a very kind, considerate, and sociable gentleman. I am convinced that he will be a promising candidate in our PhD program,” Guo says.
