The Department of Mathematics offers the Doctor of Philosophy with concentrations in applied mathematics, pure mathematics, and statistics. Research faculty in the department are active scholars who publish regularly in professional journals in areas from algebra to numerical analysis and mathematical biology to computational finance. Alumni Spotlight: J. Caleb Macdonald

Mathematics PhD graduate Joshua Caleb Macdonald, who earned his PhD in May 2022, has been honored with the prestigious Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholarship. Acknowledged by Mortimer B. Zuckerman for his scientific achievements, career plans, and leadership qualities, Caleb's success in obtaining this scholarship stands out. The Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars Program brings outstanding scholars from leading US and Canadian universities to conduct research at Israeli institutions. Caleb's research, focused on the co-evolution of cultural and genetic traits, will be carried out at Tel Aviv University's School of Zoology under the mentorship of Dr. Yoav Ram. With a grant of $44,000/year for two years (extendable to three) and an additional $7,600/year for travel, this postdoctoral opportunity marks a significant milestone in Caleb's academic journey. Dr. Hayriye Gulbudak, Caleb's PhD advisor, expresses pride in his achievements and anticipates a promising future for him as a rising scholar.

Program Requirements

In addition to satisfying the Graduate School application and admission requirements it is recommended to also submit:

Official GRE scores

A minimum of seventy-two semester hours of credit beyond the bachelor’s degree is required; at least forty-eight of these hours must be in regular course work. A student entering the program who has had previous graduate work in applied mathematics, pure mathematics or statistics will have the program of study adjusted according to the graduate work already completed.
