Thumbing through books piled atop rows of wooden tables lining the main hallway of Edith Garland Dupré Library, Emmy Lebleu found several titles that will aid her studies.
“I like having lots of reference materials,” said Lebleu, a graduate student in psychology armed with a small stack of statistics books. “Stats and research are crucial for all science. Without them, you don’t know if an effect you see in the world is true or not.”
Lebleu was among dozens of students, faculty and staff members, and others at the annual Friends of Dupré Library Used Book Sale on Thursday at the library, 400 East St. Mary Blvd. The sale began on Wednesday and will end on Saturday. It is open to the public.
“We had a good turnout for the preview sale on Wednesday night, and it’s been very steady ever since,” said Andrea Flockton, head of collection development at Dupré Library, on Thursday.
The book sale will end at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Hardcover books cost $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. The sale also includes vinyl records priced at $1.
Hundreds of donated books are sold at the annual event. Proceeds benefit Friends of the Library. The nonprofit organization of volunteers helps the library strengthen its collection by hosting fundraisers, and acquiring archival materials or valuable books.
This year, the majority of the books that are being offered are nonfiction works, including textbooks, and reference works. Some fiction, and vinyl LP records are also for sale.
One of the more interesting offerings that hadn’t been sold at about noon on Thursday was an Encyclopedia Britannica set from the 1940s.
