Beginning July 28, the intersection of McKinley Street and East St. Mary Boulevard will be partially closed while city workers install underground piping to improve drainage on campus.
Crosswalks at the intersection will be closed and through traffic will be detoured to Johnston Street, according to Joey Pons, director of Environmental Health and Safety at UL Lafayette.
St. Mary Boulevard coming into the campus will be open only to local traffic. Through traffic will be detoured around the campus. Detour and "road closed" signage will be posted in the area; motorists and pedestrians should follow these instructions carefully.
The intersection is expected to reopen to all traffic by Aug. 15.
Pons said that a couple of left turn prohibitions will be suspended during the project.
鈥淔or local traffic only, left turns will be allowed from St. Mary Boulevard onto Hebrard Boulevard temporarily. Also, left turns from University Avenue to Hebrard Boulevard will be allowed temporarily,鈥 he said.
University bus service will not be interrupted. Olivier Parking Tower on McKinley Street will remain open during the construction work, but motorists are encouraged to access the tower from University Avenue and avoid the construction site.
